About horse-country.com
The number of females entering technical and scientific fields in college has dropped dramatically since a
peak in the mid 1970's. As with academics,
expectations for girls in athletics has always been lower than for boys, but Title 9 encouraged some advances.
American Horse Council studies indicate 1.9 million Americans own
horses. Just over 4 million people are recreational riders, and 3.6
million people show and compete horses. The horse industry has a $112.1 billion
impact on the US gross domestic product: greater than the motion
picture services and the tobacco product manufacturing industries. In an article for Vetcentric.com, Erin Harty writes:
"One look around any summer riding camp or local horse show, and it's
obvious that horse-crazy young girls (and those who are decades past
'young', but still horse-crazy) comprise the lion's share of the
industry."
2007 is HC's 13th year online. Through features such as Resources
for Riders, Jr Riders Journal, YRiders, International PenPals, Cyberbarn Games,
Gymkhana Interactive Quizzes and Amazing Activity Book, we bridge this gap: making technology, math and science accessible via equestrian sports.
Horse Country Developer
 |
Kris planned Horse Country in 1994 to prove that girls do use
computers. HC is now the oldest equestrian site online and was the first
Web destination targeting girls. As one of the world's oldest horse crazy kids, her chief HC jobs are as mentor, creative and content
developer. As for riding, Kris's first love was foxhunting then dressage.
And vizslas; Kris was a founding board member of Vizsla Rescue Fund,
Inc. Today, she and her husband live on an island a short ferry ride from Seattle and you can visit their new coffee and photography website: fstopcafe.com.
Kris Carroll's horse-country.com has roots
in the early 1970s. A single mother, she was raising a four-year-old
daughter when she returned to classes to finish a Bachelor of Fine Arts
at Oregon State University in Corvallis. At the same time Kris worked for the OSU's Botany
Dept. darkroom, producing negatives of pen and ink sketches, then
prints for journal publication. Her daughter would curl up on an old
desk in a sleeping bag while Kris worked in the darkroom all night.
After Kris moved to Washington State in 1981, she eventually found work at
the University of Washington. She opened the first computer graphics
studio on campus, for the School of Medicine's Department of Pathology
in 1987, along with running the department's custom darkroom. HC was developed and first appeared
on the department's NeXT server in the days before search engines.
