Guesstimating a horse's weight in pounds
convert to kilograms

Weight tapes give a rough estimate of horse's weight.

  • Circle the girth just behind the elbow
  • Read the tape measure in inches right
    after the horse exhales
  • Measure body length from the point of the
    shoulder to the point of the buttocks in a straight line.

  • Now multiply girth in inches by itself
  • then multiply that by the body length in inches.
  • Divide the total by 330 for the approximate
    weight in pounds

For example
if the horse measures 70 inches girth circumference
and body length is 60 inches: 70 times 70 equals 4900,
times 60 equals 294000, divided by 330 equals 890.9 lbs
