Members Kirsten and Torrie selected The Equine Research Centre in Guelph, Ontario for a group donation In Memory of Gallie

Gallant III Gallant III, July 7, 1994 - February 6, 1997 - jrider Erin Sarsfield's 2.5 year old Selle Francais gelding was humanely put down when complications developed following surgery. His sire was EvenSong, and he was out of a grade A rhinelander mare from Germany. Erin hoped to go all the way to Grand Prix with this talented youngster.

Gallie became a teaching case and part of a full scale research project. Groupe de Recherche en Médecine Équine du Québec is an equine research group which was established in 1982. It was originally founded to unite researchers with an interest in fostering equine research in Quebec. It is unique in that it is the only group of clinical researchers within the Veterinary school. Research students include Master's degree students and D.E.S students who are enrolled in a residency program (either equine medicine or surgery). In addition to local graduates, many overseas students have participated in the research program. Sheila Laverty, GREMEQ director was in charge of Gallie's surgery.

JrRiders Journal contribution and this web page were thanked on page 20 of the Spring, 1996 issue of Hoofprints, official publication of Hooved Animal Humane Society.. We'd like to thank HASA for all the good work they do.

HASA uses contributions for rescued horses in this way:

  • $18 pays for farrier services
  • $56 avg mo cost for bedding for one sick horse
  • $83 transportation in HASA horse ambulance
  • $112 avg vet bill to nurse a mistreated horse back to health
  • $152 avg mo cost of feed to save a malnourished horse

HASA spends thousand$ on investigations, fighting for legislative action and educational programs.

HASA responds to complaints about cruelty and neglect with their jurisdiction.

HASA is empowered to enter barns and fields in Illinois to investigate or impound starving, suffering, neglected and abused animals.

HASA brings rescued animals to their farm and provides food, clean shelter and veterinary treatment and qualify adoptions.

HAHS purchased a 26-acre farm in Woodstock, Illinois, in the fall of 1989. The realization of an 18-year dream, this much needed rehabilitation / adoption and educational facility is an exciting new beginning and serves as National Headquarters. They are committed to aiding other states in their own quest to fight neglect and abuse of hooved animals closer to home. It would not be possible for them to continue their work without the financial support and concern of your local communities. Please be a part of helping HAHS.

Horse Country encourages all equestrians to donate time, funds and support. HC reminds people that there is a big difference between animal rights groups who take money for public relations campaigns and animal welfare groups who care for abused and neglected horses. Support those in your sport who are trying to make it better. And even Dear Abby suggests you research the finances of any organization or commercial business before you donate money.

  • Foundation for Biomedical Reseach "... promoting public understanding and support of the ethical use of animals in scientific and medical research. Many people are unaware that virtually all major medical advances of the last century can be attributed to animal research. FBR produces a wide variety of educational resources -- videos, posters, brochures, etc. -- to help the general public understand why animals are so important in the search for new and better ways to treat the diseases that afflict both people and animals."
  • Understanding Animal Reseach in Medicine "PETA's leadership truly believes that a child's life is of equal value to that of a rat, and the organization's focus is to draw more converts to its radical cause. It rakes in over $13 million each year from animal lovers who donate to "help the animals." Yet in 1995, PETA gave less than $5,000 to direct animal assistance in the U.S. The bulk of the money PETA raises goes to high profile publicity campaigns and shenanigans designed to draw media attention"
